Adding Devices to Sky Work in Three Easy Steps

There are two kinds of devices in Sky Work:
  • corporate devices
  • personal or BYOD devices

The steps for adding each kind of device is simple, the differences are:

  • where you start
  • how much control you (as a company) have over the device

Corporate devices must be brand new or freshly reset to factory settings. For your first device, we’re going to add it as a personal device because it’s faster and you might not have an extra device kicking around to test Sky Work. You can easily remove Sky Work from any device in a couple minutes. Sky Work cannot access or delete personal information, apps, or files on your device.

Before we add your first device, let’s explain a couple important differences between corporate devices and personal devices.

With corporate devices, you have complete control over the device and its settings—including remotely locking and erasing the device. Corporate devices need to be brand new or freshly wiped to factory settings. Additionally, for iOS devices you need a Mac to set the device as a “supervised” or managed device before adding it to Sky Work as a corporate device.

With personal/BYOD devices, you can add apps required apps, remove apps you added, and control a number of security settings, but you cannot not erase the entire device. Personal devices don’t have to be erased before they can install Sky Work. With Sky Work, personal data on personal devices can’t be accessed or changed. Only apps installed through Sky Work can be removed or managed by Sky Work.

Let’s get started with adding your first personal device into Sky Work.

After you log into Sky Work, the next step is to click on Users.

Click on your name.

In Sky Work, devices are connected to people, so when you’re adding single device (corporate or personal), it’s easier to start with a person.

Click “Add Personal Device”

In the menu select “Phone” and click “Submit”. You’ll get an email from Sky Work in a couple minutes with the information you need to install Sky Work on your phone.

That’s it for what you need to do within the Sky Work Portal, the rest happens on your phone.

iOS instructions:

  • Open the App Store on your device and search for “BlackBerry UEM Client”
  • Download and install the app.
  • Open the activation email you got from Sky Work on your laptop (or tablet) so you can scan the QR code with your phone to activate the device.
  • Open the BlackBerry UEM Client on your phone. Accept the license terms, and tap the camera icon to scan the QR code to activate.

On iOS devices you need to install and approve installing the secure certificate for Sky Work to secure your phone and the connection to the Sky Work servers. Please download the iOS documentation from Sky Work and jump to page 8. There are step-by-step instructions with illustrations to walk you through the steps.

Android instructions:

  • On the Google Play Store and search for “BlackBerry UEM Client”
  • Download and install the app.
  • Open the activation email you got from Sky Work on your laptop (or tablet) so you can scan the QR code with your phone to activate the device.
  • Open the BlackBerry UEM Client on your phone. Accept the license terms, and tap the camera icon to scan the QR code to activate.

After the BlackBerry UEM client has installed and gone through its setup steps, you need to confirm and update your company profile information. Here’s how:

  • Open the BlackBerry UEM client.
  • Tap Assigned Profiles.
  • Change the toggle to enable location sharing and tap “ALLOW” in the window so the UEM app can access your location.

If your passwords meet your company device policies, your UEM should say “Compliant”.

Everything else will happen in the background over the next few minutes. The UEM client will automatically download the other apps it needs, including the BlackBerry Dynamics secure productivity apps. You can learn more about BlackBerry dynamics here.

Congratulations you have set up your first managed device on Sky Work!

The next lesson is setting up automatic security profiles for employee devices and how to automatically install the mobile apps everyone needs to be productive.
